自転車の面白さ、というより二輪車の面白さはバランスをとることでしょう。

フラットペダルですね。

RD6を購入した当時、樹脂製のトゥクリップをつけてみたことがあります。
引き足の効率のよさは分かりましたが、同時にかなり違和感がありました。

昔、オートバイばかり乗っていた時期があり、トライアル車で山の中に入って遊んでいました。
つま先の向きやくるぶしによるホールドなど、ステップに対する足の位置は状況に応じて細かく調整する必要があります。
自転車ならそんな必要もあるまい、と思っていたのですが、やはり無意識のうちにペダルに対して足が動いてしまう。
トゥクリップはそんな足の動きを妨げてしまう。

バランスをとるというのは二輪車の技能という面でかなりの割合を占めます。
できるだけ小さな半径で8の字走行をさせてみるとどの程度の腕かすぐに分かる。
オートバイの場合はスロットルワークも関係します。

そういう訳でフラットペダルを使っているわけです。

CUBE EPO 29er

昨年の１２月、ARAYAのExcella Raceを予約し、同時にMuddy Fox 29erも注文。
しかし、Excella Raceの納車は３月中旬から4月中旬、Muddy Fox 29erも５月ごろとまだまだ先の話。

 ところで29erを検索しているとこんな電動アシスト自転車を見つけました。
電動アシストと29erの組み合わせ。
これは面白いなぁ。

 CUBEというドイツの会社の29erです。
36Vという強力なバッテリーを搭載し、30段変速。
ディスクブレーキは前後180mm径と強力。
バッテリーを搭載しているようには見えないデザインがすばらしい。

The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles

Amazonで「ハンドメイド自転車の黄金時代」という本を購入。
写真も文章もよく、当時の自転車事情が理解できました。
大変美しい自転車たち。

「黄金時代」が良かったので「Custom Bicycles」と「Cyclepedia」を注文。
「Custom」は最近のフレームビルダーの話で玉石混合というか石ばかりか。
この本ははずれ。

「Cyclepedia」はあたり。
大人の絵本。
下の画像は「黄金時代」でも紹介されていたカミナルジェン。
1937年製の断面八角形のアルミ分割フレーム。
8.3kgだそうです。
なお「黄金時代」に掲載されているのは51年製。

「Cyclepedia」に掲載されていた黄色いフレームのもいいな。
これを参考に中華カーボンで組んでみようかなどと考えてしまいました。

1950年代のオランダ。
第二次世界大戦が終わり、自転車が普及。
こうした自転車ブームは洋の東西を問わず所得水準の向上によりあっという間に衰退する。
より遠くに楽に行くことができるオートバイが自転車に代わり、さらにオートバイはサイドカー付きに、その後は小型自動車が庶民の足になってゆく。









「黄金時代」のP5の前書きには以下のような説明があった。

「サイクリングというスポーツに対するシクロツーリストたちのプライドが、エレガントであると同時に、信頼性が高く、精巧で美しい自転車を求めさせたのだ。
こうした技術の一部は大量生産自転車へとゆっくりと浸透していったが、「コンストラクター」によるカスタムメイドの自転車は、常に一歩先をいっていた。
このようなすばらしい自転車は、製作にかなり手間がかかるため、年に100台位という少数生産の小さな店舗が主な担い手だった。
そして戦後の初期は、三ヶ月分の給与に相当する価格で販売された。…

…またコンストラクターは、フレームビルダーとは異なり、全てに調和のとれた自転車を製作した。
市販品の性能や美観に満足いかない場合は、ステム、フロントディレイラー、ブレーキばかりでなくハブさえも自作した。
こうした自転車には究極の職人魂がこめられていたのだ。」

フレームビルダーの作る自転車に魅力がないのはこういう理由なのかと納得しました。
